Indo-US Relations Enter a Period of Diplomatic Strain

The recent G-7 meet in Canada was the first sign that Indo-US relations are not on the same platform as it was just a few months back. What exactly went wrong in this Indo-US relationship?

President Donald Trump of the United States was somewhat embarrassed by it. The intent and action were in contrast. The other reason; President Trump playing host to the Pakistan army chief, which is not something that would be acceptable to any country at the diplomatic level.

Trump is hedging his bets

It is quite clear that President Trump is trying to hedge the US bets. The US had long working India and US foreign policy relationship with Pakistan and that has stood them in good stead during the Soviet-Afghan war and later in the aftermath of 9/11. Obviously,  the US president does not want to lose out on that leverage. Also, Trump is aware that Pakistan would be more pliable as compared to India, considering the present economic state of Pakistan. But, above all, the US has deep assets in Pakistan and that is something they really need in that region. Presence in Pakistan gives the US proximity to China and Russia. Above all, it also keeps the US links with China on an even keel, as long as it is not seen too close to India.

However, India is clear that in the area of diplomacy, it really cannot rely too much on the US. That has been the past experience. For India, getting too close to the US also disrupts its equations with Iran, especially as it is relying on the Chabahar port to get direct access to Afghanistan and Central Asia, without touching Pakistan.
